Dear Fellow Plant Enthusiasts!
Over forty years ago, the International Association of Wood Anatomists (IAWA) organised the first Afro-European Regional Wood Anatomy Meeting in Pretoria, South Africa. Fast forward through eleven annual rings, and in October 1996, the next Afro-European Wood Anatomy Symposium took place, this time in Kew, organised by the Linnean Society of London, the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), and IAWA. This tradition continued with a meeting in Montpellier in 2004, co-organised by IAWA and the International Academy of Wood Science (IAWS), and later with the Tropical Forest Ecology/IAWA meeting in Tervuren in 2015. Since then, no further Afro-European Wood Anatomy meetings have taken place.
Fortunately, this does not mean that research into plant anatomy on both continents has dried up — quite the opposite. It has flourished. There is now a clear need to showcase these developments and to remind our anatomical community of the treasure trove represented by African and European floras — and by the research teams working on them.
The study of vascular plant structure poses complex conceptual and methodological challenges. Meeting these challenges requires interdisciplinary collaboration, drawing insights from plant biology at every level, from the cellular to the ecosystem scale. Partnerships between plant anatomists in Africa, Europe, and across the globe offer exciting opportunities to push the boundaries of our understanding.
With this in mind, we are committed to reviving and sustaining the tradition of Afro-European meetings, facilitating the exchange of ideas and discoveries among researchers from different countries and career stages. One of our main goals is to engage students and early-career scientists with the international community of wood and bark anatomists. This is especially important today, as classical disciplines such as plant anatomy, morphology, and taxonomy are at risk of fading away unless we ensure the involvement of the next generation of researchers.
We warmly invite you to the Afro-European Wood and Bark Anatomy Conference (AfEWBA) in South Africa — a country of exceptional plant diversity, offering untapped opportunities for botanists. The conference will be hosted by the University of Johannesburg, a dynamic and rapidly growing institution that not only houses one of the country’s leading teams of structural botanists but is also a recognised leader in sustainable development. AfEWBA will explore wood and bark as well as other related topics, broadening the focus to include aspects that extend beyond the traditional scope of these fascinating plant tissues.

Post-conference trip
Extend your visit to South Africa by joining our five-day post-conference excursion to the spectacular Blyde River Canyon and the world-renowned Kruger National Park. The tour combines botanical exploration with unforgettable wildlife experiences in one of Africa’s most celebrated protected areas.
The tour is planned for a maximum of 28 participants. As late November marks the beginning of the peak tourist season in South Africa, accommodation and other arrangements must be confirmed well in advance. We therefore strongly encourage you to book your place by 31 August 2026 to secure your participation.
21 November 2026
We will depart from Johannesburg by a 32-seater bus and arrive at the Blyde Canyon Forever Resort at approximately 17:00. After check-in, participants will enjoy dinner at the resort.
22 November 2026
After breakfast, we will embark on a guided botanical excursion along the Guinea Fowl Trail (4 km) in Blyde River Canyon. This scenic hike offers an excellent opportunity to experience the spectacular landscapes of the canyon while exploring the unique vegetation of the Lowveld.
Please note that the trail includes several steep descents and ascents. Participants should wear sturdy walking shoes suitable for rocky terrain. Some sections of the trail may be wet, and we will cross a shallow stream using stepping stones. We also recommend bringing a hat, sunscreen, and sufficient drinking water.
After the excursion, we will drive to Pretoriuskop Rest Camp in Kruger National Park, where we will spend the next three nights. Lunch will be taken in Graskop.
In the late afternoon (17:00), we will enjoy a short game drive in the vicinity of Pretoriuskop Rest Camp. The evening will conclude with a traditional South African braai (barbecue), where meat and vegetables are cooked over an open fire. More than simply a meal, a braai is an important social tradition and an integral part of South African culture. Vegetarian options will be available.
23 November 2026
Our day begins early with a sunrise game drive departing at 04:00. Dawn is one of the best times to observe wildlife. We may encounter predators such as lions, leopards, and spotted hyenas returning from their nightly hunts, while zebras, giraffes, and various antelope species become active with the rising sun. We expect to return to the camp at approximately 07:00.
After breakfast and some time to relax, we will depart at 10:00 for a game drive through the southern part of Kruger National Park, exploring the wildlife and vegetation of the Lowveld savanna. We have excellent opportunities to observe elephants, buffaloes, crocodiles, and an impressive diversity of birdlife. We expect to return to Pretoriuskop Rest Camp at around 14:00.
Following a short break, we will set out again at 15:00 for an afternoon game drive around the camp. As temperatures begin to cool, many animals become more active, increasing our chances of memorable wildlife sightings. We expect to return by approximately 18:00.
24 November 2026
After breakfast, we will depart at 08:00 and travel northwards through Kruger National Park, exploring the diverse savanna landscapes between Skukuza and Satara. Along the way, we will have opportunities to observe a rich variety of plants and wildlife in one of Africa’s most iconic protected areas.
We expect to return to the camp at approximately 15:00 for a short rest before setting out on a sunset game drive (16:30). As daylight fades, the African bush comes alive with nocturnal species, offering excellent opportunities to spot leopards, African wildcats, black-backed jackals, spotted hyenas, and other animals that are most active after dusk. Sunset is also one of the most spectacular times to experience the beauty of the African savanna.
25 November 2026
After breakfast, we will leave Kruger National Park and drive to Mbombela (Nelspruit), where we will visit the Lowveld National Botanical Garden (https://www.sanbi.org/gardens/lowveld/). Renowned for its extensive collection of South African trees, the garden also features a spectacular waterfall and represents several of the country’s major vegetation types.
Following lunch, we will return to Johannesburg, with an expected arrival at approximately 18:00.

What to Bring
November marks the beginning of the South African summer. Daytime temperatures in Kruger National Park typically range between 25 and 35°C, while early morning game drives can be surprisingly cool. Layered clothing is therefore recommended.
Kruger National Park is located in a malaria-risk area (although the real risk is very low). Participants are advised to consult their healthcare provider or travel clinic regarding appropriate preventive measures before travelling.
We recommend bringing:
- Comfortable, sturdy walking shoes suitable for rocky trails
- A hat, cap, or other sun protection
- Sunscreen
- Binoculars
- A reusable water bottle
- Lightweight clothing with long sleeves and long trousers
- Insect repellent
Accommodation
Blyde Canyon Forever Resort
Participants may choose between two accommodation options:
- Single cottage
- Shared chalet with two separate bedrooms with two separate beds in each. The bathroom is shared.
The accommodation package includes dinner, bed, and breakfast.
The resort offers complimentary Wi-Fi, although reception may be limited in some rooms.
Pretoriuskop Rest Camp
Two accommodation options are available:
- Bungalow – one room with two single beds and a private bathroom.
- Hut – one room with two single beds; bathroom facilities are communal.
Breakfast and dinner will be served as buffet meals at the Wimpy Restaurant in Pretoriuskop Rest Camp. These meals are included in the tour price.
Free Wi-Fi is available only in limited areas around the restaurant. Mobile data services provided by MTN and Vodacom generally offer more reliable internet access within the camp. Outside the rest camps, mobile phone coverage throughout Kruger National Park is limited and may be unreliable.

Weather November brings mild spring temperatures (20°C – 25°C), but be prepared for occasional rain showers. This is an especially pleasant time of year, as several Johannesburg neighbourhoods turn violet with flowering jacarandas.
Safety Jozi, as the city is affectionately known by locals, is a vibrant and dynamic place with much to offer. Like many large cities around the world, it has areas where it is wise to remain cautious. The conference venue is located in a quiet and welcoming area, and we are confident that you will have a comfortable and enjoyable stay.
Nevertheless, we recommend taking some sensible precautions. We advise against walking alone at night or displaying valuables such as electronics or expensive jewellery. If you are planning to explore the city, feel free to liaise with the Organisers: we will gladly offer guidance on how to enjoy Johannesburg safely and help you discover its many cultural and natural attractions.
