Plan your visit
Venue
The conference will be held at TheKerzner@UJ Conference Centre, located on the Bunting (APB) Campus of the University of Johannesburg (https://thekerzner.uj.ac.za/). The venue is situated in a quiet area with a wide range of comfortable and reasonably priced accommodation options nearby.
Accommodation
We recommend booking accommodation in Braamfontein Werf or Auckland Park, the suburbs closest to the conference venue. Both areas are approximately a 15–25-minute walk from the venue.

In Braamfontein Werf, we recommend the Garden Court Milpark Hotel (https://www.southernsun.com/garden-court-milpark). There are also several affordable apartment options available through Airbnb, Booking.com, and other accommodation platforms.
In Auckland Park, these platforms offer a range of comfortable guest houses, including Bed & Breakfast options.
You may also consider accommodation in Melville, Emmarentia, or Parktown. These are pleasant suburbs, although they are located somewhat farther from the conference venue.
We do not recommend booking accommodation in Brixton or Braamfontein, with the exception of Braamfontein Werf, as these areas may be less comfortable for visitors.
If you have any questions about choosing where to stay, please contact us at afewba2026@uj.ac.za. We will be happy to advise you.
Travel
Delegates arriving from other countries will land at OR Tambo International Airport, approximately 30 km from the conference venue. We recommend purchasing a local SIM card or eSIM and exchanging some currency upon arrival, as taking care of these matters at the airport is generally more convenient.
To reach Johannesburg from OR Tambo International Airport, you can use reputable ride-hailing services such as Uber (https://www.uber.com/za/en/) or Bolt (https://bolt.eu/en-za/), or the EZ Shuttle airport shuttle service (https://www.ezshuttle.co.za/).
You may also consider renting a car at the airport; several car rental companies operate at OR Tambo International Airport (https://ortambo-airport.com/car-rental.html).
Currency
Currency exchange offices are available in the International Arrivals Hall at OR Tambo International Airport. Banks in Johannesburg also offer currency exchange services, although this can be more time-consuming.
Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted throughout South Africa, so cash is generally not required for everyday expenses.
Mobile SIM cards
We recommend purchasing an eSIM in advance of your arrival.
If you prefer to buy a local SIM card in South Africa, the major mobile operators Vodacom, MTN, and Cell C have service counters in the International Arrivals Hall at OR Tambo International Airport.
Electric plugs
The three-pin Type M plug, with large round pins arranged in a triangular configuration, is the most common type of electrical plug and socket in South Africa (https://powerplugsockets.world/plug-type/type-m/).
Europlugs (Type C), with two slim round pins, are also widely used (https://powerplugsockets.world/plug-type/type-c/).
We recommend bringing an appropriate adaptor if your devices use a plug type other than Type C or Type M.
Transport in Johannesburg
Johannesburg’s public transport system is relatively limited, so Uber and Bolt are generally the most convenient options for getting around the city. We recommend installing both apps on your phone before travelling.
Weather
November brings mild spring temperatures (20°C – 25°C), but be prepared for occasional rain showers. This is an especially pleasant time of year, as several Johannesburg neighbourhoods turn violet with flowering jacarandas.
Safety
Jozi, as the city is affectionately known by locals, is a vibrant and dynamic place with much to offer. Like many large cities around the world, it has areas where it is wise to remain cautious.
The conference venue is located in a quiet and welcoming area, and we are confident that you will have a comfortable and enjoyable stay.
As a general precaution, avoid openly displaying valuables such as smartphones, cameras, or expensive jewellery in public places. We also recommend avoiding earphones while walking, particularly in unfamiliar areas, as they can make it harder to remain aware of your surroundings.
Avoid walking alone at night and use reputable transportation services rather than accepting unsolicited offers of rides.
The conference will take place at the Auckland Park Bunting Road (APB) Campus of the University of Johannesburg (UJ). For your convenience, we recommend saving the APB Security Control Room: +27 (0)11 559 1312 and the South African Police Service national emergency number: 10111 on your phone.
Most importantly, don’t let these simple precautions put you off exploring Johannesburg! If you are planning to explore the city, feel free to liaise with the Organisers. We will gladly offer guidance on how to enjoy Johannesburg safely and help you discover its many cultural and natural attractions.
